Significance: documenting architectural innovation

Archway Heritage’s Conservation Management Plan for Cemex House Archway Heritage has embarked on an exciting project to document and preserve a significant piece of modern British architecture. We are currently recording the iconic roof garden and distinctive windows and doors of Cemex House (formerly RMC International Headquarters) in Surrey as part of a comprehensive Conservation Management Plan (CMP). Designed by Edward Cullinan Architects and completed in 1990, Cemex House is a testament to innovative sustainable design. The building, which received Grade II* listing in 2014, is renowned for its extensive roof lawn and passive cooling system, making it a pioneering example of environmentally conscious architecture.

Significant features

By meticulously documenting the roof garden, a key feature that sets this building apart, we have recorded details about its construction before, during and after renovation. The expansive green roof minimises the building’s visual impact on the surrounding green belt and plays a crucial role in its thermal regulation. By recording the plant species, soil depth, and drainage systems, Archway Heritage is ensuring that future conservation efforts can maintain the roof’s ecological and functional integrity. The windows and doors of Cemex House are equally important to its design and energy efficiency. We are carefully cataloguing these elements, noting their materials, dimensions, and unique features. This detailed documentation will serve as a valuable reference for future repairs or replacements, ensuring the building’s original character and performance are preserved.

Creating a comprehensive CMP

The roof garden and fenestration documentation is just one part of the larger Conservation Management Plan that we are producing. This plan will serve as a crucial tool for the building’s long-term preservation and management. It will include:
• A thorough assessment of the building’s significance
• Detailed descriptions of its architectural features
• An analysis of its current condition
• Guidelines for maintenance and repair
• Recommendations for future conservation work

By creating this comprehensive CMP, Archway Heritage is not only helping to preserve a significant piece of modern architecture but also contributing to the broader understanding of sustainable building practices. Their work will ensure that Cemex House continues to serve as an inspiration for environmentally conscious design for generations to come. This project highlights the importance of specialised conservation work in preserving our architectural heritage. Through our meticulous documentation and planning, we have contributed to safeguarding one of Britain’s most innovative late 20th-century buildings.
